How Date Differences Are Calculated
The total number of days between two dates is an exact count of calendar days, leap days included. The friendlier years-months-days breakdown counts complete years first, then complete months, then leftover days — using each month's real length, which is why the breakdown isn't a simple division of the day total.
Breakdown = complete years + complete months + remaining days
From May 15, 2026 to August 17, 2026: 3 complete months (to August 15) plus 2 days = 3 months, 2 days — a total of 94 days, or 13 weeks and 3 days.

A common year has 365 days and 52 weeks plus one day, which is why your birthday advances one weekday each year — two after a leap day. February 29 exists in years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400: 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2100 is not. Over the full 400-year Gregorian cycle, the average month is 30.436875 days.

How many days are between two dates?
Count the calendar days from the start date to the end date, including leap days. This calculator does it exactly — for example, January 1 to December 31 of a normal year is 364 days, and a full year from any date to the same date next year is 365 or 366.
Does the count include both the start and end date?
By default the difference excludes the start day itself (Monday to Friday = 4 days). If you need an inclusive count — common for booking nights vs. days, or event durations — tick the “include end date” option to add one day.
How are months counted when they have different lengths?
The years/months/days breakdown counts complete calendar months from the start date: January 31 to March 3 is 1 month (to February 28 or 29) plus the remaining days. Because month lengths differ, two 3-month spans can contain different numbers of days.
What are business days and does this calculator count them?
